32-bar reel for four couples in a four-couple longwise set

1–8          1st and 2nd couples, also 3rd and 4th couples, dance the spiral progression from own sides, as follows:

 

1–4    1st man and 2nd woman, also 3rd man and 4th woman, turn with the right hand three quarters and, giving left hand to other's partner, all balance in line.  On the second setting step, 1st woman and 2nd man, also 3rd woman and 4th man, pull back left shoulder to face clockwise and join nearer hands with the same dancer as before.

 

5–8    1st and 2nd couples, also 3rd and 4th couples, in a diagonal line, dance round one place.  2nd man and 1st woman, also 4th man and 3rd woman, release hands while 1st man and 2nd woman, also 3rd man and 4th woman, continue turning with the right hand to finish on own sides, opposite partners, in progressed places.  1st man and 4th woman remain facing out.

 

All finish in the order 2, 1, 4, 3.

 

9–16        1st man with 2nd and 4th men, also 4th woman with 1st and 3rd women, dance a reel of three on the side. 1st man passes 2nd man, also 4th woman passes 3rd woman, by the right to begin.  On bars 15-16, 1st man crosses from 3rd man’s to 3rd woman’s place, also 4th woman crosses from 2nd woman’s to 2nd man’s place, and faces out.  (FIG. 1)

 

17–24      1st man with 2nd and 1st women, also 4th woman with 4th and 3rd men, dance a reel of three on the side. 1st man and 4th woman pass partner by the left to begin.  On bars 23-24, 1st man crosses the dance in 2nd place, also 4th woman crosses in 3rd place, to own side.  2nd woman and 3rd man remain facing out.  (FIG. 2)

 

25–28      2nd and 3rd couples dance half double figures of eight on own sides, 2nd couple dancing out and down and 3rd couple dancing out and up to begin.  2nd woman dances in front of 3rd woman, also 3rd man dances in front of 2nd man, as 2nd and 3rd couples dance between 1st and 4th couples in own sideline.  All finish in the order 3, 1, 4, 2. 

 

29–32      1st and 4th couples dance left hands across once round.

 

               Repeat from new positions.

Bars 1-24 of this dance were originally conceived as ‘Sailor Hector’ in June, 2006.  Bars 25-32 were revised around 2013 and the resulting dance was renamed in January 2017.
